Cimzia Side Effects, Overdose and Pregnancy Information
Cimzia side effects include headache,
fever,
increased blood pressure,
rash and itching of skin, bacterial, viral or fungal infections, and
pain, swelling, redness, bruising, bleeding or itching at the injection site.
Less common Cimzia side effects may include Cancer,
benign tumors or cysts,
anxiety,
mood swings,
dizziness,
eye disorders, and
heart problems.
Rare Cimzia side effects include blood clots, eczema, psoriasis, acne, discoloration, photosensitivity.
hair loss,
flu-like symptoms,
changes in menstrual cycle,
thyroid disorders,
suicide attempts, delirium,
ringing in the ear (tinnitus),
sarcoidosis, and
sexual dysfunctions.
Cimzia Side Effects Reporting
If you experience any Cimzia side effects not mentioned above you should report it to your primary health care provider or FDA 1-800-FDA-1088 in the United States, Health Canada 1-866-225-0709 in Canada, MHRA 020 3080 6000 in UK, or TGA 1800 020 653 in Australia.
Cimzia is a type of drug called a Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF alpha) blocker. Main ingredient in Cimzia injection (subcutaneous) is Certolizumab Pegol. TNF alpha is a protein produced by the body that is involved in causing inflammation. Cimzia works by suppressing the process of inflammation and is used for treating symptoms of moderate to severe Crohn's disease as well as rheumatoid arthritis.
In treating rheumatoid arthritis Cimzia is used in combination with Methotrexate, when other DMARDs have not been effective. Cimzia can also be used on its own for people who can not take Methotrexate, or when continued treatment with Methotrexate is unsuitable.
CIMZIA OVERDOSE
In case of Cimzia overdose, seek medical attention right away. Though Cimzia overdose is unlikely as it is injected.
Cimzia and Pregnancy
Cimzia is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it could potentially be harmful to fetus. Women who could get pregnant should use an effective method of contraception to prevent pregnancy, both during treatment and for at least five months after their last Cimzia injection. If you think you could be pregnant at any point during treatment you should tell your physician straight away.
Nursing mothers should switch to bottle-feed while being treated with Cimzia.
Cimzia Warning and Caution
Cimzia can compromise the body's ability to fight infections. Cases of tuberculosis (TB) and other serious infections have been seen in people treated with Cimzia. You should be tested for TB before treatment is started. Tell your physician right away if you experience weight loss, fever or persistent coughing during treatment, or in the five months after your treatment has finished, as these can be symptoms of TB.
It is important to try and avoid exposure to infections during your treatment. Let your physician know as soon as possible if you get any symptoms of any infection, so that it can be treated without delay. This also applies for five months after you stop using Cimzia, as this is how long it may take for the drug to be fully removed from the body. If you develop a serious infection, treatment with Cimzia should be stopped until the infection is controlled.
Cimzia may decrease the number of certain blood cells in the blood. A low white blood cell count can increase your susceptibility to infections; a low red blood cell count causes anemia and a low platelet count can cause problems with blood clotting. For this reason, you should tell your physician right away if you experience any of the following symptoms during your treatment, as they may indicate problems with your blood cells: unexplained bruising or bleeding, purple spots, sore mouth or throat, mouth ulcers, high temperature (fever) other signs of infection, or looking pale, feeling tired, breathless, or generally unwell. Your physician may need to take a blood test to check the levels of blood cells in your blood.
If you develop new or worsening symptoms of heart failure during treatment with Cimzia, for example shortness of breath or swelling of your feet or ankles, you should tell your physician right away.
Consult your physician right away if you experience any of the following symptoms while receiving treatment with Cimzia: unexplained confusion, numbness, and changes in vision or difficulty walking.
Certain types of cancer have uncommonly been reported in people treated with Cimzia, or with other TNF blockers. This risk is increased in heavy smokers. It is important to discuss with your physician your risk of cancer relative to the potential benefit to you of Cimzia, before you start treatment.
If you are due to have any surgery or dental procedures, it is imperative to tell your physician or dentist that you are having treatment with Cimzia.
Cimzia should be used with caution in seniors, heavy smokers, people with decreased kidney and liver functions, history of hepatitis B, disorders such as multiple sclerosis, dormant tuberculosis (TB) infection, mild heart failure, history of or current cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and people who are or who have recently been receiving treatment that suppresses the activity of the immune system, e.g. long-term oral corticosteroids, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, drugs to prevent transplant rejection.
Cimzia should not be used in children under 18, people with severe infections, e.g. abscesses, leg ulcers,
active tuberculosis(TB),
people with infection of the blood or body tissues with pus-forming or other pathogenic organisms,
people with lowered immunity, and
moderate to severe heart failure.
Cimzia Interaction
Cimzia suppresses part of the immune system. It is recommended that live vaccines are not given to people being treated with Cimzia as they may cause serious infections. Live vaccines include: measles, mumps, rubella, MMR, oral polio, oral typhoid and yellow fever.
Cimzia is not recommended for use in combination with anakinra or abatacept, as this blend may increase the risk of serious infections, without an increase in effectiveness against the sickness treated.
