Aciphex is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) given to relieve heartburn and other symptoms associated with the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, a condition commonly known as acid reflux disease. It is also prescribed to heal the damage of the lining of the esophagus that acid reflux disease can cause. Aciphex works by reducing the production of stomach acid. Aciphex can turn off the acid production in as little as an hour.
Aciphex is prescribed in combination with the antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to treat the ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infections.
ACIPHEX WARNING
Do not take Aciphex if you are allergic to other PPIs.
The antibiotics prescribed in conjunction with Aciphex for the treatment of ulcers like amoxicillin and clarithromycin have occasionally been known to cause severe side effects and life-threatening allergic reactions in some people.
Aciphex may cause drowsiness in some people. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery unless know how it affects you.
ACIPHEX SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects of Aciphex may include headache, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, rash, fatigue, cough and back pain.
Rare side effects of Aciphex may include acne, allergic reaction, anemia, black stools, blood disorders, blood in urine, burping, chest pain, chills, confusion, cramps, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, dry mouth, rigidity, ringing in the ears, runny nose, sensitivity to touch, sinus problems, sleep disorders, sleepiness, sore throat, stomach bleeding, stomach pain, stomach upset, sweating, swelling, taste changes, thirst, tremors, urinary tract infection, vertigo, vision changes, vomiting, weakness, weight changes, worsening of arthritis, worsening of asthma, and depression.
ACIPHEX INTERACTION
Check with your physician before combining Aciphex with the following:
Blood thinners like Warfarin
Diazepam
Digoxin
Iron salts
Ketoconazole
Nizoral
Valium
ACIPHEX AND PREGNANCY
If you are or planning to be pregnant, check with your doctor to see if Aciphex is right for you. Nursing mothers should switch to bottle-feeding while taking Aciphex.
ACIPHEX DOSES
ADULTS
The usual dosage is single 20mg capsule once a day, 1 hour before meal.
People with liver problems should take lower dosage.
CHILDREN
Aciphex is not recommended for children under 18.
ACIPHEX OVERDOSE
Symptoms of Aciphex overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, dry mouth, flushing, headache, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and sweating.
In case of an Aciphex overdose, seek medical attention right away.
