Main Ingredient: Norethindrone Acetate
Aygestin is derived from the progesterone which is the main hormone involved in the pregnancy. Progesterone helps the womb to accept the fertilized egg as well as maintaining the growth of the fetus. Progesterone regulates other hormones to start and stop the menstrual cycle. Aygestin is given to treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS), absence of menstruation, prevent premature labor, abnormal uterine bleeding and in combination with ERT (estrogen replacement therapy) to prevent estrogen from thickening and abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus. Aygestin is also given to people including men suffering from sleep apnea to stimulate breathing.
CAUTION
Aygestin should not be used during the first 4 months of pregnancy; as this could result in birth defects.
Avoid using Aygestin if you are allergic or sensitive to any progestin.
Avoid using Aygestin if you have a history of asthma, blood clot, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, high cholesterol, stroke, kidney or liver disease, varicose veins, heart problems, breast cancer, genital cancer, osteoporosis, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding or miscarriage.
SIDE EFFECTS OF AYGESTIN
Common side effects of Aygestin may include abdominal pain, acne, blood clot in a vein, lungs, or brain, breakthrough bleeding, breast tenderness, increase in blood pressure, depression, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, rash, itching, spotting, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, gain or loss of body hair and water retention.
Aygestin may cause dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how Aygestin affects you.
Aygestin may also increase sensitivity to the sun.
AYGESTIN INTERACTION
Check with your doctor before combining Aygestin with the following
-Aminoglutethimide
-Carbamazepine
-Phenobarbital
-Phenytoin
-Rifabutin
-Rifampin
AYGESTIN AND PREGNANCY
Avoid using Aygestin during pregnancy. It may cause birth defects especially during the first 4 months of pregnancy.
Aygestin appears in breast milk. If you are nursing switch to bottle-feed while taking Aygestin.
AYGESTIN DOSES
Dosage will depend on the medical condition being treated.
If Aygestin upsets your stomach, take it with food.
AYGESTIN OVERDOSE
Aygestin overdose symptoms may include enhanced side effects. If you suspect Aygestin overdose seek medical help right away.
