Butal compound, is a nonnarcotic analgesic (pain killer) and relaxant, prescribed for the relief of migraine and other tension headache symptoms that do not respond to regular over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics. Butal compound combines a sedative barbiturate (butalbital) with aspirin and caffeine.
Butalbital in Butal compound may cause mental and physical dependence if taken over long periods of time.
If you are allergic or sensitive to Aspirin, ask your doctor if Butal compound is right for you as it contains acetaminophen (paracetamol) instead of Aspirin.
Use extreme caution if you have asthma, other respiratory problems or liver disease.
Butal compound may cause you to become drowsy. Do not drive or operate dangerous machinery until you know how Butal compound affects you.
If you are being treated for severe depression or drug abuse inform your physician before using Butal compound.
Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems before using Butal compound .
Common side effects of Butal compound may include lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach ulcer or bleeding, nausea, and sleeping disturbances in the beginning. Usually these symptoms go away with use. However, if these symptoms persist or become bothersome, inform your physician.
Rare side effects of Butal compound include fatigue, agitation, disorientation, euphoria, constipation, insomnia, rash, diarrhea, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Butal compound as butalbital slows the central nervous system (CNS) and intensifies the effects of alcohol causing overdose symptoms.
Check with your physician before combining Butal compound with the following:
Antihistamines such as Benadryl
Antidepressants
Drugs known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors
Major tranquilizers such as Valium
Muscle relaxants
Narcotic pain relievers
Sleep aids
Herbs such as catnip, hops and Kava.
If you are or planning to become pregnant, inform your physician right away.
Nursing mothers should switch to bottle-feed while taking Butal compound.
ADULTS
The usual dose of Butal compound is 1 or 2 tablets taken every 4 hours as needed. Not to exceed 6 tablets per day.
CHILDREN
Butal compound is not recommended for children under 16.
Symptoms of Butal compound overdose may include coma, confusion, drowsiness, low blood pressure, shock, slow or troubled breathing, stomach ulcer or bleeding, excess perspiration, feeling of bodily discomfort, nausea, and vomiting.
If you suspect Butal compound overdose, seek medical attention
right away.
