Omeprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) given to relieve heartburn and other symptoms associated with the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, a condition commonly known as acid reflux disease. It is also prescribed to heal the damage of the lining of the esophagus that acid reflux disease can cause. Omeprazole works by reducing the production of stomach acid. Omeprazole can turn off the acid production in as little as an hour.
Omeprazole is prescribed in combination with the antibiotics
amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to treat the ulcers caused by Helicobacter
pylori infections.
