Zileuton Side Effects, Overdose and Pregnancy Information

Zileuton side effects are headache, dizziness, upset stomach, and allergic reactions. Other Zileuton side effects may include bronchitis, bruising, cough, drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, itching, rash, restlessness, nausea, and vomiting.

Zileuton is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used to treat asthma as well as to relieve the stuffy, runny nose and sneezing caused by seasonal allergies and hay fever. Leukotrienes are chemicals that occur naturally in the body that cause inflammation during asthma and seasonal allergies. Zileuton helps by interfering with the formation of leukotriene. Zileuton can reduce the frequency of asthma attack, if taken on a regular basis. However, Zileuton does not help during an asthma attack. Other quick action asthma drugs should be used during an acute attack.

ZILEUTON CAUTION



Zileuton should NOT be used during an asthma attack.

Inform your doctor if you have liver disease before taking Zileuton.

ZILEUTON INTERACTIONS



Check with your physician before combining Zileuton with the following:

Alcohol beverages
Astemizole
Beta-blockers
Blood thinners
Cisapride
Cyclosporine
Felodipine
Isradipine
Nicardipine
Nifedipine
Nimodipine
Phenobarbital
Rifampin
Theophylline

 

ZILEUTON AND PREGNANCY



Zileuton should only be used during pregnancy if considered necessary. If you are or planning to become pregnant, inform your physician right away.

To be on the safe side, nursing mothers should switch to bottle-feed while taking Zileuton.

ZILEUTON DOSES



ADULTS AND CHILDREN (age 12 and up)
600 mg 4 times daily.

CHILDREN (under 12)
Zileuton is not recommended for children under 12.

ZILEUTON OVERDOSE



Little is known about the effects of an overdose caused by Zileuton. If you suspect Zileuton overdose, seek medical help right away.
