Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha)

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha), helps lower high blood pressure by dilating the coronary arteries. Hawthorn is also recommended for lowering cholesterol.


In Europe, especially in Germany where its FDA counterpart, Commission E has recognized hawthorn as a remedy for congestive heart disease, hawthorn is widely recognized as a treatment or heart related conditions. It is now gaining in popularity in the United Sates as well.

CAUTION

The FDA considers hawthorn as an herb of undefined safety.

If you are take prescription heart medications, such as beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers, or have a heart condition, do not use it until after consulting your physician.

Avoid using this herb if you are pregnant or nursing.

SIDE EFFECTS

Could cause nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

OVERDOSE

May cause sudden drop in blood pressure and vertigo.
